Lesson on Thursday, October 11, 2018 (L7.2)

Aim: What was required to make the United States a strong, viable, independent republic in its early years, and how did debates over the Constitution shape relations between the national government and the states?

Bell Ringer: CNN10 (current events) (watch yesterday's video that we didn't get a chance to see)

Agenda:

1. Pop Quiz 7.2

     b. The largest real estate purchase in U.S. history, sold by Napoleon Bonaparte to the United States in 1803.

A REPUBLIC EMPIRE IS BORN:

2. Sham Treaties and Indian lands (GEO)

*The Treaty of Greenville

*Assimilation Rejected

3. Migration and the Changing Farm Economy (MIG)

*Southern Migrants

*Map 7.3

*Exodus from New England

*Innovation on Eastern Farms

*J42 / A: Easterners moved westward to speculate on lands for a profit, to purchase independent  farms for their growing families, to pay debts, to avoid overcrowding, to leave areas dominated by slave labor, and to establish new cotton plantations. With the invention of the cotton gin, cotton planters wanted to acquire more land to keep up with the global demand for cotton.

*Patterns of Continuity and Change Over Time: Review the reasons why Europeans originally migrated to New England in the 17th Century (chapter 2). Compare these to the reasons why settlers migrated westward from new England to other parts of the United States. What elements of continuity do you see between these two movements? What elements of change?

4. The Jefferson Presidency (POL)

*Marbury v. Madison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOvsZyqRfCo (3:30 min)

*Thomas Jefferson in 60 seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_VdRgpHUMY (1 min)

*The conflict between Jefferson and Marshall is a good place to discuss the relationship between the federal judiciary and the other branches of government. While Supreme Court justices are supposed to be "above politics," often they can only act in accordance with the general mood and direction of the country. Examples in which the courts have come into conflict with the executive or legislative branches:

Jackson administration
New Deal
late 1960s
early 1970s

5. Jefferson and the West (MIG, GEO)

*The Louisiana Purchase

*Louisiana Purchase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBAsURdQFi0 (3 min)

*Secessionist Schemes

*J43 / A: While Hamilton envisioned an urban America, Jefferson located the true American experience on the farm. He hoped for an uncorrupt nation of independent yeomen farmers who enjoyed landownership, independence, and the right to vote.

*Lewis & Clark Meet the Mandans and Sioux
