Aim: How did Islam become a more universal faith? 

Bell Ringer: Read pages 128-129 "Rise of the Abbasids"

Objectives:

3. Students will discuss significant people and beliefs associated with Islam.
4. Students will describe key economic, political, and social developments in Islamic history. 

Agenda:

1.   1. Bell Ringer (10 min)
2. Journal 10 – Describe how Islam spread westward. (10 min)
3. Discuss Journal 9 (5 min)
4. Discuss map on page 129, answer questions 2 and 3 (10 min
     5. Videos: "What is Sufism and Can It Stop Radical Islam?" and "Sufis Dancing in Mosque"
     6. Copy the timeline on page 129 on white paper (15 min) / Teacher grades Journals 1-10 at this time.
